Makarska

The city of Makarska developed around a natural harbor, nestled between the picturesque Sveti Petar (St. Peter) peninsula and Cape Osejava. This unique harbor is the only one of its kind between the Cetina and Neretva rivers. Historically, it offered refuge to sailors, pirates, and merchants during storms, and today it continues to provide shelter for yachts, sailing boats, and tourist vessels.

Makarska’s strategic location contributed to its growth as a trading port, particularly during the Ottoman and Venetian occupations. In modern times, the city is connected to the nearby island of Brač by a ferry that operates several times a day, with the route linking Makarska to the town of Sumartin on the island.
